Hand-embroidered ‘tattoo’ shirts based on sailor’s tattoos. Inspired by a heritage of exploration and discovery on the sea.
Tattoos have been seen across all ancient cultures as a way to protect against outside forces but also represent family, belonging or tribe. They spread in the 1800’s as sailors would get tattoos on their travels, with the most popular ones being from Japan. They are closely related to embroidery, with embroidered jackets and clothing being used to protect against bad spirits when traveling and to show belonging. Embroidery is something that links all cultures!
Our embroidery is done by hand in West Bengal in a kantha stitch style. The fabric is hand-woven organic cotton.
